Ruin, by Rachel Van Dyken

4.5 out of 5 stars

Click to Purcahse

When I made the decision to purchase Ruin I did so soley based on the fact it was a book by Rachel Van Dyken, an author whose stories I always seem to enjoy.  I had no clue as to the plot and therefore was completely blown away when the last page was turned and the story's final message was portrayed.  The first thing I did was text my blog partner, "Ruin...what a completely emotionally beautiful story!  Truly uplifting.  You need to read this book next."

In an effort not to give away any spoilers I am going to be as vague as possible.  Ruin is the story of Kiersten, a small town girl with a tragic past still haunting her present, and Weston; a good-looking, charming, star football player with a famous father trying to live each day to its fullest.  These two unexpectedly meet when a frustrated and overwhelmed Kiersten literally runs into Weston's abs at college Registratsion.  Adding further to her embarrassment Kiersten learns Wes will be her dorm RA.  In the end these two strike up a friendship, one in which both of their lives will be impacted in a major way.

Go buy this book, then grab a box of tissues and prepare to be touched.  Very early on you have suspecions, which are confirmed about Wes.  Even though his reality is a tough nail to swallow just remember it's what made him into the strong, positive, outgoing, determined man you've fallen in love with, and while you're going to be upset and the tears are going to come, don't worry because you do get a HEA and an even better epilogue.

I think what I loved most about his book was Wes and his outlook on life.  How different life would be if we saw things as Wes does.  I never dreamed this story would have so many good pieces of advice or that it would be filled with uplifting life-altering quotes.  And while this was a super emotional read for me there were plenty of parts I found myself smiling or laughing and I ended the journey on an incredible reader's high.

Kiersten and Wes' relationship wasn't an easy one but it also wasn't filled with unnecessary drama.  These two were surprisingly honest with one another which gives us as reader's more opportunity watching their love story transpire.  There is also plenty of hot chemistry between the two and while there isn't any sexual scenes there are plenty of swoon-worthy moments.

I honestly think this is a book everyone should take the time to read.  It's not a long story as I was able to read it in a day, but the overall message is one filled with so much hope that I believe everyone should experience it for themselves.  Fall in love with Wes and Kiersten...once you've finished their story take the time to also read the acknowledgement's.  Rachel Van Dyken has certainly outdone herself once again with not only suberb and emotional evoking writing but also a truly beautiful story.  It was such a pleasure to journey through Ruin!

Elite (Eagle Elite #1), by Rachel Van Dyken

4 out of 5 stars

I received an ARC copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review...

In an effort to please her dying grandmother Trace applies for the Eagle Elite annual scholarship lottery.  The changes of getting in are one in a million, however, it seems as though luck is on her side when she is chosen as the recipient.  While attending Eagle Elite may not have been Trace's first choice she goes because in the end all she wants to do one day is take care of her grandfather, a simple farmer in Wyoming.  Trace knows this school will open many doors of opportunities with good paying jobs, which will make taking care of him not only easier but possible.

Upon arrival to Eagle Elite Trace senses this isn't going to be a normal college experience.  It seems as though Eagle Elite is an entirely different world of its own.  For starters there is a group of students known as the Elect who not only run the place but have very strict rules, which must be followed at all times..."#1 Do not touch the Elect.  #2 Do not look at the Elect.  #3 Do not speak to the Elect."  The Elect happens to be run by Nixon who as you can imagine Trace is instantly attracted to, and why wouldn't she be he's hot, mysterious and has tattoos.  Unfortunately, Trace soon realizes Nixon is spiteful and mean with every one of his actions coming across with the sole purpose of making Trace's life a living nightmare.

From the get go Trace comes across as strong and determined, never letting on to how much Nixon's antics are getting under her skin.  She does her best to stand up to him showing her new peers while she may have won the lottery to get there she can belong.  However, no amount of determination helps because Eagle Elite is like living stuck in nightmare.  The more she gets to know people the more confused she becomes.  She isn't sure who can be trusted and she cannot figure out why not only the students but the teachers as well allow Nixon and the Elect to run all aspects of the school.  Obviously there are secrets, but what happens when Trace realizes their secrets quite possibly involve her???

This was a very intriguing read for me.  While reading I had theories as to who Nixon was and how Trace may play into the bigger picture, but Rachel Van Dyken kept me guessing for the majority of the book.  The pieces didn't all come together until the end and then I was left wondering what's going to happen next for Trace and Nixon.  Fortunately you are treated to the Prologue of Elect, the second book in the series, at the end and my first reaction when I finished reading was..."no way!!!  That cannot happen!!!"

When I read Elite I was kind of in a reading slump, having not recently read anything that really sucked me in.  Fortunately Elite broke the cycle.  I was so consumed trying to figure out where this story was going, who was Nixon, does her really care for Trace, how is it going to end, is Trace who I think she is?  That I had a hard time putting the book down.  Those things being said remember this is a fiction book, it's not real.  So many times we read books and get upset if they don't have any resemblance to reality, which is why some people don't like paranormal.  I cannot say that's me.  I read to escape and this was a fun, exciting somewhat dangerous escape.  I have no idea if a world like this really exists and I don't care, it made for a very intriguing reality escape.

Trace was awesome.  I loved how strong she was and it didn't bother me she was clueless at times.  I think she was putting things together herself but at the same time may have been living in denial about what it meant for her.  I love how she stood up for herself, always making the best of the situation she was handed.  Even though she was put through the ringer she seemed to stay true to herself.

Trace and Nixon have some pretty awesome chemistry and I cannot wait to see more of this couple together. I foresee some serious obstacles.  I love how Nixon was written to come across as a strong, determined, take charge jerk of a leader, yet it was all just a front.  Underneath that persona he is fiercely loyal, gentle, protective an actual gentleman.

This was my second Rachel Van Dyken book and I was not disappointed, I really love her stories.  Take a chance, one click Elite today!  For $2.99 you cannot go wrong, in my opinion it's a steal!

The Darkwoods Trilogy, by J.A. Redmerski

The Mayfair Moon (The Darkwoods Trilogy #1)
4.5 out of 5 stars

Book Description:

After a nightmarish encounter with a werewolf, seventeen-year-old Adria Dawson loses her sister, but gains the love of a mysterious young man and his legendary family.  Strange and tragic things begin to happen in the small town of Hallowell, Maine: residents come down with an unexplainable 'illness' and some disappear. In the midst of everything, Isaac Mayfair is adamant about keeping Adria safe, even from her sister whom he has warned her to stay away from.  As unspeakable secrets unfold all around Adria, impossible choices become hers to bear. Ultimately, no matter what path she takes, her life and the lives of those she loves will be in peril. As she learns about the werewolf world she also learns why her place in it will change the destinies of many.

Review:

After completing The Edge of Never by J. A. Redmerski, I was so in love with her writing style I purchased every book available.  I had absolute faith in her ability to write paranormal romance and was not disappointed in the least!  From the first chapter I was totally in love.  Anytime an author can reference Ian Somerholder and The Vampire Diaries (one of my favorite TV series), they have me hooked!

The Darkwoods Trilogy is the story of Adria and Isaac.  It's easy to say the story had a “Twilight” feel to it because of the age of the characters; however, there is no “love triangle" or vampires, but be prepared because there is tons of family drama!  J.A. Redmerski pulls you in with her descriptions as she takes you to this new werewolf world but be warned this series is overwhelmingly addictive.

Adria and her sister Alex live with their mother and drunk/abusive step father in Georgia.  It's definitely not a good situation, but they have each other and try to make the best of things.  One night, on their way home, they have a crazy, downright scary encounter and witness something unexplainable, which will forever change the course of their lives.

After that night, things go from worse to bad.  Adria and Alex are forced to move to Maine and live with their Aunt and Uncle in addition to having to meet new friends and adjust to a new school.  Further complicating things Alex is acting weird, closing herself off from Adria and when she does emerge from her room Adria finds Alex keeping company with a very questionable crowd.  Adria desperately wants her sister back and will stop at nothing to find out what's troubling her, hoping to "save" Alex even if it's from herself.

On her quest for information Adria crosses paths with Isaac.  From the moment Isaac's introduced I couldn't help but fall for him, even though I had no idea to his motives and quite honestly wondered if the vibe I was getting and his supposed feelings for Adria were even genunie.  He comes across as mysterious, superior, moody and even a player, especially after being caught in what seem to be compromising situations.  However, as time prevails he proves himself worthy, fiercely protective of Adria, loyal, swoon-worthy, hot---the perfect Alpha!

Not only did I fall for Adria and Isaac but I also found myself connected to many of the secondary characters as well.  I loved Harry, their friendship and his ability to keep Adria grounded and talk some sense into her when no one else seems to be able. Alex, Adria’s sister keeps things interesting with her smart mouth and hatefulness.  Nathan, Isaac's brother, is hilarious and really made me laugh out loud.  And let's not forget Genna, who is so sweet and seems to be the perfect friend/matchmaker you just cannot help but having a soft spot for her in your heart!

I've read several YA paranormal romance books, including several based on werewolves.  I have to admit this is my favorite series based on werewolves and while it may be considered YA you can most certainly expect a very well developed plot, one which deals not with high school circumstances, but with deep and complicated scenarios and life-altering decisions.  There is so much more to this series than a love story between a human girl and a werewolf.  It's definitely well worth the $2.99 price tag, don't hesitate to give The Mayfair Moon and The Darkwood Trilogy a chance.

Kindred (The Darkwoods Trilogy #2)
4.5 out of 5 stars

Book Description:

Isaac Mayfair is hiding a dark secret.  And just when Adria Dawson thinks the worst of her life among the warewolf world is over, she learns the secret that can rip her and Isaac's love apart.  Adria must come to terms with what the truth means for her.  What it means for her life and how much time she has left to live it.  She must choose between two different fates, neither of which can offer life as a certainty.

As if Isaac's betrayal isn't enough, Adria learns that there are things out there older and more powerful than werewolves could ever be.  An archaic entity known only to few as the Praverian, unlike anything Adria has ever known or heard of.

As Adria struggles with her own fateful dilemmas, she must also try to find out why the Praverian is so interested in her and do everything in her power to stay out of its way.

Review:

What can you expect with Kindred?  An increase in the intensity of Adria and Isaac's story and diving even further into an even more complicated plot.  As their story continues Adria finds herself struggling to keep her sanity especially as she delves into the events of the night Viktor captured her.  The more she remembers the further she falls, ultimately believing she is blood bound with Viktor and fearing she will forever loose both Isaac and her sanity.  She keeps this secret and theory to herself, while at the same time Isaac is also keeping a big secret.  It's heartbreaking watching them struggle individually and when Isaac's truth finally comes out your initial reaction is to be angry, but then you realize like Adria he was just trying to protect the one he loves.  Oh, be prepared it's a BIG reveal!  But this big reveal leads right into the mature ya part of the book, and all I'm going to say is that it's good....really good!

You can also expect to be introduced to another supernatural being, the Praverian.  They have a major connection to Adria and will most certainly be an impact on her future.  I really enjoyed their introduction to the story and the possible theories which sprang to mind.

As always you can expect vivid and detailed descriptions, further character development, which will only strengthen your connection to many of the characters you already love, more twists and turns in the story line and of course plenty of heart pounding action.  One thing is for sure J.A. Redmerski has an awesome imagination and I love diving into her brilliant stories.

The Ballad of Aramei (The Darkwoods Trilogy #3)

Book Description:

Everything about Adria Dawson's life has changed in unimaginable ways:  the shattering betrayal of her mother, the fight for her life and sanity...the loss of her humanity.  But now Adria must face the ultimate challenge and risk not only her life, but the lives of everyone she loves at the wrathful hands of Isaac Mayfair's father.

Determined to help unravel a mysterious message deeply rooted in an unhinged mind, Adria becomes obsessed with traveling into Aramei's turbulent past to see the truth of how the relationships and  betrayals between the Mayfair and Vargas bloodlines were formed.

Meanwhile, Adria and the Mayfairs are doing everything they can to smoke out and trap the Praverian traitor. A  trip to Providence uncovers not only an odd family line who are enemies of the Praverians, but also raises questions about the Praverian's true agenda.

But the traitor will be caught.  People will die.  And Adria's destiny to be the cause of a war will come to pass.  But what could a kind and simply girl like Adria Dawson ever do that could be considered an act of war?  The landscape of the warewolf world will be forever changed in the climactic conclusion to The Darkwoods Trilogy.

Review:

For me the best part of the Ballad of Aramei was finally seeing all the puzzle pieces falling into place and Adria and Isaac finally working everything out and getting their own HEA.  I selfishly wised we had gotten a bigger glimpse into their HEA, maybe a deeper look into their future together, but like I said it's a selfish request because I really enjoyed these two characters and wanted watch them enjoy the future they worked so hard to secure.

Obviously as with the book's namesake you finally get to hear all of Aramei's heartbreaking emotional story. Another treat was getting to see Adria develop a strength like you haven't seen from her before and taking her rightful place in Isaac's pack.  She is forced to make some pretty tough decisions in this final installment and I loved watching her back up those decisions even though her motives may have been misunderstood and essentially caused a war.

I could go on and on about this trilogy, it kept me guessing and I could not put it down.  My blog partner and I were talking about it for several weeks after we finished.  My big “complaint” is that the story left me hanging and wanting more!  However, I think the plan is to write more stories for this series, but maybe that has been put on hold with the huge success of The Edge of Never and Killing Sarai.  But if you are listening, J.A Redmerski, we want more of the Praverian Chronicles, we love this paranormal series and want to know more about our favorite characters!

Honestly, give these books a shot, for only $2.99 you don’t have much to lose.  It’s really hard to write a spoiler free review for 3 books, so just trust us, you will LOVE them.

The Significance Series, by Shelly Crane

Significance (Significance #1)
4 out of 5 stars

Click to Purchase

Significance, is the first book in this is a YA paranormal romance series.  From the start I was drawn to Maggie, a 17 year old who we meet just as she graduates from high school.  Early on we learn she was a very involved student with excellent grades and for most of high school dated the school's football star.  That is until right before senior year when he decides he just wants to be friends, three days after her mother packs up and leaves for no reason.  After the fallout of being dumped and left Maggie finds herself withdrawing from her friends and school activities, barely passing her classes, while managing to work a full time job at the diner to help put food on the table since her father lost his job and fell into depression.  In a nutshell Maggie's senior year as been anything but perfect and she is glad its finally over.

Feeling alone and not wanting to be stuck in her house on graduation night Maggie reluctantly agrees to hang out with Kyle, a friend who she has persistently shot down.  Needing an escape and hoping to kill time before meeting up with Kyle, Maggie decides to go out for some coffee.  On her way she notices the guy in front of her is about to walk out into oncoming traffic.  Without hesitation she grabs his backpack and pulls him back onto the safety of the sidewalk.  Having been pulled so hard the guy falls backwards and knocks her over.

Once the shock of what's happened fades and Maggie takes a good look at the stranger, Caleb, she finds herself attracted to him and unable to look away.  As conversation continues Maggie discovers Caleb is Kyle's cousin and he offers to walk her over to Kyle's.  It's clear Maggie and Caleb find themselves drawn to one another, not wanting to leave the other's company and just as she is leaving she introduces herself to Caleb and offers her hand, Caleb takes it and with one touch Maggie's life is forever changed.  .

From this point prepare to be completely sucked into this sweet, beautiful, heart pounding love story.  This is is a story about strangers who are soul mates.  About a girl who's life unexpectedly changes, and while she is faced with a new and very real danger has found unconditional love in a boy and in a family, she is no longer alone in the world.

Significance is not a book about vampires, werewolves, witches or aliens.  The Jacobson's are Virtuoso or Charmed and call themselves Aces.  When a virtuoso imprints with their significant they descend, gain an ability and become an Ace.  Unfortunately for the past 20 years imprints have stopped all together, leaving the clans with no new Aces or abilities and over time they fear becoming more vulnerable.  Virtuoso's desperately want imprinting to resume so their heritage can be protected.  It's obviously is a very big deal when Caleb imprints and while most people are happy there are also those who are jealous and desperate, and will go to extreme measures to prevent Caleb's descent.

Will Maggie be able to adjust to the new world she was thrust into?  In gaining a family will she loose her father and brother in the process?   When danger comes for her will Maggie go willingly or will she put up a fight?

Shelly Crane immediately sucks you into this story filled with love, devotion, heartache and suspense.  While it is a romance, Maggie and Caleb's relationship is not the forefront of the story.  There are plenty of family members, best friends, jealous ex's and sworn enemies whose antics easily fill up the pages only adding depth to this journey.  I was able to get this first book on sale for "free" and found myself so invested with the characters and plot as soon as it was finished I gladly and without hesitation bought the remaining books in the series.  I definitely recommend Significance if you are looking for something new in the paranormal world.  I mean who doesn't want to read about an all encompassing soul mate kind of love where in the couple work together as a team to protect one another, heal one another, never even having the desire to stray.  It may at times feel predictable but overall Significance is absolutely beautiful and Caleb and Maggie are an adorable couple!

Accordance (Significance #2)
4 out of 5 stars

Click to Purchase

Accordance picks up with Maggie and Caleb where we left them at the end of Significance, so please don't read any further if you haven't finished reading Significance.  They just arrived in California in hopes of escaping Sikes, Marcus and echo dreams.  They are thrilled for the opportunity to spend some time together alone only to find themselves quickly disappointed when their chaperons Kyle and Bish show up.

Shelly Crane wastes no time jumping back into the story, the danger and drama surrounding Maggie.  Right off the bat Marcus comes to taunt her in another echo dream.  Although this time he comes to make a deal.  The knowledge of her ability in return for the motivation behind Sikes actions.  She agrees to his offer and learns of a prophecy, one in which Sikes is afraid she will come to fulfill.

It's obvious from the tone of this book Caleb and Maggie came out of her kidnapping ordeal stronger as a couple even though they are still "getting to know one another."  I really enjoyed watching them try to keep their relationship normal, making time for things couples who aren't in danger do on a regular basis.

You can certainly expect to find more danger and obstacles in this book, you also learn more of the history of the Ace world, which I believe is really important to the entire series.  It's no longer just about a human girl imprinting with an Ace after a 20  year dry spell.  Caleb and Maggie's story is shifting and now it's more about Maggie's role in this new world.  As her abilities continue to grow she finds herself overwhelmed, unsure and needing Caleb's support and love more than ever.  I loved watching the two of them struggle individually then working through things, coming together to realize and actually believe that together they are stronger.  They realize the importance of being each other's support system and I love how they value the their relationship, always thinking of the other and putting them first.  What a beautiful demonstration of commitment!

Shelly also takes you further into the stories of the secondary characters.  On the one hand I found Kyle even more frustrating because he doesn't even try to hide his thoughts or feelings, which only ends up making Maggie feel worse.  However, then I think to myself, can you blame the guy?  He has been secretly in love with her for 2 years and now in a matter of weeks he's had to deal with the reality he will never be able to act on those feelings and she will never return them.  It's really kind of sad.

Then there's Bish who you find even more outraged with Maggie's actions and has stepped up the over protective big brother role.  I feel bad for him also because he's the only one in the dark, but at the same time I like it because it brings a sense of reality to the story.  It's like he is the voice of reason.  Why is everyone so accepting?  His actions and questions remind the reader what's going on isn't normal----its paranormal!  You begin to wonder if he ever found out the truth would he be accepting?

So, Bish and Kyle's story lines deepen and before long you find yourself just as curious about their roles and have your fingers crossed one day they will get their HEA.  There is no doubt in my mind this series wouldn't be the same without the antics and interactions of each supporting character.  Their stories only bring depth to the story.

Finally, I must comment on the ending!  What a cliff hanger!  Just when you think you have it all figured out Shelly throws you a curve ball and you are left speechless.  You won't be able to wait to see what happens in book 3, and I love being forced to stay on my toes and question each and every theory.

Defiance (Significance #3)
4 out of 5 stars

Click to Purchase

Defiance is not a stand alone novel and so before you read any further in this review please first go read Significance and Accordance.  The third installment picks up exactly where Accordance left off.  Maggie, Caleb and the Jacboson clan having fought off Sikes and several other Watsons have just arrived in London for the reunificantion.  Upon arrival Maggie is bombarded when she realizes Sikes wasn't her biggest enemy, it is in fact Marla.  So, not only does she have to deal with the council but she must also figure out a way to stay a step ahead of Marla.

Caleb and Maggie just cannot catch a break.  As it turns out the council seems to have some corrupt members who are trying everything imaginable to keep the two apart, Maggie's father and Bish are being targeted and they must figure out how to help them and Maggie must find a way to convince the others that changes must be made in order to move forward, but how will she do this when it seems no one wants to take her seriously?  Marla definitely plays her part in making Maggie look as though she has no respect for the Virtuoso world and is even scarier than Sikes could have dreamed of being, and let's not forget about the secret of her birth father which will also come to haunt her at some point.

It seems ridiculous for me to say this but the drama has increased even more with this installment, and there is going to be some serious action and a big show-down, so be prepared.  However, there are plenty of happy and love-filled moments.  As always it's Maggie and Caleb against the world and its so much fun watching these two trail blaze and continue falling more and more in love.  You also get lot's more from Kyle and Lynne and of course it's heartbreaking watching Jen and Bish's bittersweet relationship, fingers crossed that these two can find a way to eventually be together.  One thing I really love about this series is how it emphasizes a strong family core built on love and protection for each other.  It's a beautiful story and I really enjoyed this 3rd book.  I have no idea where the characters will go in the 4th installment, but hopefully we can just watch them live out their HEA!

Independence (Significance #4)
4 out of 5 stars

Click to Purchase

So what can you expect from this 4th and final installment?  Lots of love, romance, tying up loose ends and if you can believe it Shelly finds a way to bring back some more danger and drama!  As with the other books this one picks up right where the last one left off.  Maggie, Caleb and everyone else are back from London and are planning some weddings.  Yes, that's right you get treated to more than one!

Before Caleb and Maggie can move forward they must find a way to make sure everyone in their families are safe while also figuring out a way to have the future they so desperately want while still maintaining their respective roles in the Virtuoso world.  An enemy does threaten to take everything away, will this couple prevail or will the enemy win?

This book seemed much shorter than the others, and the drama wasn't as intense and it felt a little forced but what I enjoyed most was seeing all the loose ends tied up.  When I finished I felt like everything had come full circle and there really wasn't any where else the characters could go.  Everything was tied up nicely.  It was a perfect ending to the series, and of course Caleb is just going to make your heart melt with all of his thoughtfulness and supportiveness.  If you are looking for a quick and fun paranormal series then give The Significance Series a chance, you might also be interested to know Significance has been picked up for a movie and is slated for a November 2014 release.  So, check this series out before the movie releases!

The Enemy

Review:

First of all, we need to tell you that The Mystic Series is so fantastic.  It is the BEST paranormal romance we have read since Twilight.  It is different in the aspect that the characters are older and not in high school. There are no vampires or werewolves either.    There is no love triangle, however that doesn’t take away from this story.  There is still a ton of great steamy romance in this series.  The best thing about this series in my opinion, is Layla.  She is strong and independent, humble, fiercly compassionate and is not your typical damsel in distress.  She encompasses the qualities you would want your own daughter to have.

Descension, what is the first book about really?  It is all about Layla’s descent into the magical world of witches and wizards, that she has unknowingly lived outside of for the last 21 years.  (Please note, just because this has witches and wizards do not automatically associate it with Harry Potter.  We loved the Harry Potter series, but this is totally different and you should definatley give it a try.)  Layla grew up in OK, with her single mom.  She has never really had a life because when she was 18, her mom had a massive stroke and Layla has spent the last 3 years working and taking care of her mother.  2 months prior to her 21st birthday, her mom Katherine passed away.  The day after her 21st birthday Layla finally works up the nerve to go see her mother’s lawyer to retrieve one last possession left from Katherine.  What she learns from the possession will change her life so much more than she could ever have imagined.  After discovering secrets about her past, Layla decides to set out on a course to gain some answers about her true identity.  While traveling in Oregon, she meets Quin.

The first encounter Layla has with Quin is so amazing.  When you feel from one glance like you’ve been “X-rayed, and peered straight into your soul”, that’s one hell of a first impression.  Quin is a tall, bronzed, gorgeous specimen of a man.  But he is also very mysterious and seems too good to true.  He is the epitome of a gentleman and seems to always know what she needs.  There are so many questions that Layla needs answered, but will she be able to accept the unknown?  And where does Quin fit into the picture?  Perhaps the biggest threat to Layla is the evil lurking and searching to destroy and control her.  Will good conquer evil?  Or will evil destroy Layla’s life too?
B.C. Burgess paints such vivid descriptions of the magical world that exists beyond the humand world.  She is amazing at setting scenes and sucking you into the story immediately.  You know you have discovered a fantastic author/series when you read three books in one weekend, starting and finishing one right after the other.  This series is fun, mysterious, magical and romantic.  We loved it from cover to cover!

Review:

First things first, if you have not read Descension do not read any more of this review.  It will contain spoilers from the first book and we do not want to ruin any of this fantastic series for anyone!  Impassion begins the day after Descension ends.  There is no lag time, which we love.  That means we never miss a moment of Layla’s journey.  You have been warned.

Impassion begins with Layla struggling to come to grips with the deaths of her parents.  Due to the dramatic way she learned of her own birth and subsequently her parent’s death, it was as if she were actually watching it happen in real time.  It is hard for her to not blame herself and move past this horrible event that took place over 21 years ago.  On the other hand, she now knows and understands how great her parents’ love for her truly was…they made the ultimate sacrifice and died to protect her.  Armed with that knowledge, Layla vows to always appreciate things around her, no matter how small and live life to the fullest with no regrets.

We are also learn more about the other members of the coven, including Layla’s grandparents.  With the knowledge of her being a double bonded witch, she is now in more danger than ever.  As Layla begins to delve more into the magical world, it becomes evident that her magical abilities are second to none.  With training and time, she is on her way to becoming the most powerful witch around.  Now that Layla’s eyes are open to her true identity, she is even more scared for her family.

Argo is out searching high and low in Idaho, Oregon and surrounding areas.  He uses everything possible in hopes of capturing Layla.  He feels utter embarrassement because Aadean, Layla’s father, tricked him into believing that Layla never existed.  This is a huge blow to his ego and now that he knows she has been living in the shadows in Oklahoma for 21 years his fury knows no bounds.  He will let nothing stand in his way of retrieving what he believes is rightfully his.  He knows that once Layla is trained in magic she would be his most powerful weapon in the Unforgivables army.  Will he succeed in locating Layla and forcing his plans on her?  Or will a mysterious stranger beat Argo to Layla and force her into his own evil scheme?  Which one is the greater evil?

Quin and Layla have a powerful attraction that is undeniable by both of them.  Each moment they are together, their desire for one another as well as their friendship grows.  Layla struggles with Quin’s playboy past, her greatest fear, being history repeating itself like it affected her parents.  In addition to these fears, a new wizard, Finley arrives on the scene causing trouble for this budding romance.  It seems like he is attracted to Layla in a sick stalker way.  He challenges Quin’s every word and really gets under your skin.

If it is even possible, we love these characters more than we did in the first book.  Quin makes us melt every time he speaks to Layla.  We love that Layla finally has found a family and is experiencing happiness for the first time in many years.  She never fails to surprise us with her selflessness.  It is such a great love story that not only encompasses romance but the family ties that bond us all.

Review:

Hopefully, by now you know, if you have not read Descension and Impassion do not read any further.  We will have to kick your butt otherwise.  Don’t spoil these books for yourself.  Trust us they are too good. Now, on to the review!

Deception begins right after the horrible attack on Layla by Argo’s number one man.  I was freaking out a little for Layla when she was attacked but am glad she was rescued and luckily magicians can heal really quickly.  I love how Impassion ended with Quin and Layla admitting they love each other!  Praise God its about time!  Now if only they could find the time to consummate this relationship we would be estatic.

Unfortunately, Layla’s rescuer, Finley, wants nothing more than to gloat about his ability to protect Layla.  Since he has announced that he is double bonded like Layla, he seems to feel like he is entitled to everything and everyone being at his beacon call.  He really tries to make a play for Layla’s affections, which does nothing more than alienate him.  Layla is pretty up front in the fact that she is in love with Quin and the enticement of power does nothing to sway her.

Layla comes face to face with the evil searching her out.  Who will find her first?  Argo or the stranger?  How will she react to the threat and who will be left to protect the coven?

While this book is full of nail biting intensity and drama, this is still a romantic story unlike any other we have read before.  The feelings that Quin and Layla share are so intense it is easy to lose yourself in the story and just feel their emotions.  We love that while Quin and Layla are strong individually, together, they seem unbreakable.  Their relationship grows by leaps and bounds in this book and it is so refreshing to get to see them enjoy each other in normal, everyday activities.  We are introduced to some of Quin’s friends and old flames, which only add to the story.

BC Burgess is a fantastic author who paints the most beautiful vivid stories.  It is as if you don’t even see the words on the page, but the scenes unfolding before your eyes instead.  We would love to tell you everything about this book, but feel it would ruin the experience for you.  Trust us you don’t want to miss out!  Also, once you have read all three books, treat yourself to some teasers by clicking here.  We are anxiously awaiting the release of Retribution in September!

Thanks to the amazing B.C. Burgess we are able to offer another signed 3-book set of the Mystic Series, enter below:

The Mighty Storm, by Samantha Towle

4.5 out of 5 stars

Trudy Bennet, a music journalist, and Jake Wethers, mega star, bad boy and lead singer of The Mighty Storm, grew up neighbors and best friends.  That is until Jake and his family moved to the USA and he eventually ceases contact with her.  Tru has been in love with Jake for years, long before he became a famous rock star, following Jake's career and life from a distance, only telling a few trusted friends her connection to him.  While he was her first love she's moved on with both life and love and finds herself 12 years later working for a magazine, living with her best friend Simone and in love with Will, her boyfriend of 2 years.

So what happens when Tru's boss arranges for her to interview Jake?  She totally freaks out because she has no idea if he will even remember her and even though her feelings for him are in the past she knows she will be devastated if he doesn't.  But, what if Jake does remember, there is also the chance he quit writing her for a reason and perhaps doesn't want to see her.  Yet she is also completely thrilled for the opportunity and even though she is nervous she cannot wait to see him again.

The first time they reconnect for the interview sparks fly!  It's also when I realized this book and Jake Wethers had me hook, line and sinker.  It's obvious to everyone, except Tru, Jake has feelings for her and Tru's feelings never really went away.  Those feelings were just simmering and seeing Jake again has brought them back to life.  Jake, realizing he doesn't want to lose Tru again, makes her an offer she cannot refuse, come on tour and be his official biographer.  Tru agrees to this opportunity of a lifetime, why wouldn't she...she has her best friend Jake back and is in love with Will her sweet, thoughtful and very trusting boyfriend, things couldn't be better!  As you can imagine the story just explodes at this point.

Consider yourself warned, there is some cheating, which I'm never a fan of, but it's not the point of the story and it doesn't go on very long.  It's unfortunate, tough and there is true regret, but it's also handled with honesty and resolved as quickly as it begins.  It's also so well written you sympathize with the characters truly understanding where they are coming from and ultimately it comes down to love, loving someone enough to choose them, to recognize life is better with them in it than without.  No, The Mighty Storm isn't a book about cheating it's a story of two people who fell in love as kids but because they were kids they weren't able to give that love a chance at a relationship.  This is a story about two people who were meant to be together and are finally given a chance to explore a real relationship. Jake and Tru belong together, they are better as a couple than apart and while all of those things are obvious it doesn't mean their relationship will be easy or that life will always be perfect.

The Mighty Storm is Jake and Tru's love story and it's beautiful, heartwarming, emotional, steamy and at times filled with turmoil.  This couple must overcome a lot of real life issues very early on such as drugs, fame, paparazzi, personal insecurities on both their parts, jealousy, cheating and ultimately choosing whether or not to fully commit.

Aside from being an incredibly hot, tattooed famous rocker Jake is also possessive about the things he cares for, confident to go after and take what he wants, sensitive, vulnerable, sweet and pretty damn romantic (of course this is all coming through Tru's eyes so I can totally see why she is in love with him).  If there is one thing I can say about Jake it's that he absolutely backs up his words with actions and I loved seeing him in control, yes that also includes the bedroom!  Another great quality, he has no problem admitting when he is in the wrong and apologizing when he realizes his mistake.  I also wouldn't say this is a story about him finding the one person who "tames" him and reforms his bad-boy ways.  I think it's more about Jake getting to a point in his life where he knows he cannot keep living the same kind of lifestyle he's become accustomed to, of wanting more out of life and of finally getting the one person back who makes him want to be a better person and start living again.

It's also as much about Tru going after what she wants in life.  It's her journey of risking her heart for someone she never dreamed she would have.  It's learning to live with the fame and money that comes with dating Jake Wethers.   It's about deciding if she wants this part of her life to play out in the public eye and if their love for each other is strong enough to battle the demons which she knows will surely follow being in a such a high profile relationship.

I enjoyed this book tremendously.  There is just the right amount of smut and if I had any complaint it would be feeling as though the story ended too quickly.  That's not to mean this was a super fast read, it probably took me over 8 hours, so for $2.99 I would say I definitely got my money's worth.  I just wished I had been able to see more of this couple because I fell in love with them so much.  In my opinion this is a must read so go one click it now and get carried away in The Mighty Storm.  If you end up enjoying this book as much as I did you will also want to go ahead and pre-order the next chapter of Tru and Jake's story, Wethering The Storm, which comes out on August 20th.

Review:

I received and ARC copy of Love Me in exchange for an honest review...

Obviously if you haven't read the first three books in this series (Stalk Me, Kiss Me, Date Me) you need to go one click, read, then come back and check out the rest of this review.

First things first, I love Keatyn and ultimately I'm always going to be Team Keatyn even when she frustrates the hell out of me.  There were times I wanted to throw my Ipad across the room!  Sometimes, its hard reading from her prespective because I easily forget she is only 17, but with all life has thrown at her in such a short amount of time she really has dealt with things extraordinarily well.

In the beginning Keatyn really upset me because she seemed to act in the moment and not take into consideration the bigger picture.  She does a lot of acting before thinking in Love Me, I kept wondering is she ever going to get it!  Will she ever just stop, open her eyes and think about what it is she really wants?  However, by the end I can honestly say Keatyn grew up a lot.  She realized she needs to love herself and really began to take control of her life, understanding what is important.  You would think someone with the privileged upbringing Keatyn's had would never struggle with self confidence issues, but she does and truthfully it makes her seem like a more "average" girl, which I love.  Over the course of this book she has also become more independent.  Our teenager is truly becoming more responsible and growing up, she has come such a long way since Stalk Me!

I think it's also important to note that you can also expect to see growth from some of the boys as well.  There  were so many instances with Dawson where I came unglued with my frustrations of him.  I kept thinking, use your head not your...well you know what! Haha!  I'm happy to say he did redeem himself in my eyes a little although he will never get my vote for Moon Boy.  It's not just Dawson who seems to mature but we see some growth from Brooklyn, even though I am not thrilled he is back in the picture, and I noticed a difference in Aiden as well.

What kind of awesome things can you expect from this book???  Boys, Boys and more Boys!  I was melting into a pile of mush at certain points in this book!  Romantic dates in NYC, lots more wooing, nail-bitting Vincent encounters, Whitney drama, blasts from the past, closure, conversations and interactions with potential Moon Boys, rumors, bubble baths and of course, lots of shopping.  There are also some pretty amazing events occurring at Eastbrook you get to witness such as perspective student/Greek weekend, will the God of all Hotties be crowned Olympian?  There is also the school play, how is Keatyn's performance?  The playoffs and Pussy Bowl along with the varsity player's banquet, whose jersey will Keatyn wear?  We also learn someone's birthday, which is not in December, eliminating them as a potential Moon Boy candidate.

Jillian never fails to leave us asking questions and wanting more.  The ending is just huge and all I can say is thank goodness we are going to get a small Keatyn fix in November because I'm definitely going to need it!  I am even more addicted now than I was at the end of Date Me.  I am so thankful Adore Me is only a few months away because it would be next to impossible to wait until the release of Hate Me.  By the way...in case you're wondering I am still 100% Team Aiden as her one and only Moon Boy.  Do not hesitate, read this book.  It's amazing and you're going to love it!

Lost and Found, by Nicole Williams

5 out of 5 stars

We have always enjoyed reading books by Nicole Williams, but this is by far our favorite!  When the book begins we are introduced to Rowen Sterling, a city girl from Portland, OR who is out to prove she is worthy to her mom.  Rowen has to survive working and fitting in at Willow Springs Ranch in Montana, otherwise her mom is refusing to fund her art school expenses.  Art is everything to Rowen and she doesn’t want to give up her dream even if she is the only one that believes in it.

Our first impression of Rowen is that she is rough around the edges and has a dark wild side.  She is obviously damaged by her past and uses her goth/emo appearance to hide the scars of that past.  Rowen doesn’t feel like she has any self worth and struggles to believe anyone could ever care for her, much less love her.  She has a great heart, but needs guidance to see it.

Holy hot cowboy!  Do we ever love some Jesse Walker!  Maybe we love him because we are southern and have an infatuation with cowboys, but I don’t think so.  I mean who doesn’t love cowboys?!?  Seriously, who can go wrong with skintight wranglers, boots, muscles, a cowboy hat, and charm!  Jesse is definitely one of our favorite book boyfriends of all time, maybe even number one.  We are so torn between Jesse, Will and Holder its like a toss up at this point.

When Rowen steps off the greyhound bus in Montana and first meets Jesse there is instant chemistry, not love but lots of great banter and conversations.  We love their back and forth teasing and questions to each other.  Jesse seems to have this uncanny ability to push through Rowan's walls, the more she is around him the more she finds her self smiling, opening up.  Rowan believes someone with as good of a heart and attitude as Jesse could never love her and she definitely doesn't believe she deserves him so she works really hard to resist falling for him, hoping to keep from getting her heart broken.  Jesse on the other hand, with his unique life mantra wants nothing more than Rowan to see herself through his eyes, see the woman he is falling in love with, allow him into her life, believe in herself, protect her from whatever has been haunting her.

Once Rowen arrives at Willow Springs, we are introduced to lots of fabulous secondary characters.  We love Jesse’s mom Rose.  She deserves a mom of the year award.  She is very intuitive and gives excellent advice.  We love the fact that she welcomes Rowen with open arms and encourages her to be herself no matter who that person might be.  She shows Rowen that she is worthy of love with every action and is probably the first parental unit that Rowen has ever encountered.

In every story there is gonna be some drama.  In Lost and Found, drama goes by the name Garth Black (we can’t wait for his book to be released!).  From the first encounter with Garth you know he is nothing but a tall, dark and handsome troublemaker.  He sees Rowen as a challenge and is not one to back down.  He can play some serious mind games with Rowen because they are a lot alike.  He is not all bad and by the end of the book, you have a soft spot in your heart for him.

Obviously, opposites attract, but will a “goth” girl everyone labels a “freak” and an upstanding, seemingly perfect cowboy fit together?  One click Lost and Found now and fall in love with Jesse and Rowan, this is a story you don't want to miss and one you won't be able to stop thinking about.  Nicole Williams has outdone herself with this beautiful, heartwarming story.  You're seriously going to melt!  I am so glad Near and Far, Jesse and Rowan's sequal, recently released.  More Jesse and Rown is always a good thing!
