Review 4.25 of 5 Stars
I love a book that is not your typical, love at first sight book. When I was on the cover reveal tour and read the synopsis and saw the gorgeous cover, I was sold on reading this book. Not to mention that her Broken Fairy Tales series was amazing, I was excited to dig into this second chance romance.
Alexa is the wife to Mike, the mother to her kids, the friend to others, but what makes her happy anymore? I can relate a lot to parts of Alexa's story. I think women, in general, struggle with balancing life. For example, I work full time, have a great husband and kids, run a blog with my best friend and spend most days running around like a crazy person. It is easy to forget in the daily grind of life what makes you, well YOU! I have a very hard time remembering to take care of myself and I think this is the part of Alexa's story I most relate to and sympathize. Her husband is a total jerk and I didn't like him from page one. Even when she had flashbacks to happy memories with Mike, something about him was off.
When Alexa is attending a business event with Mike, she sees an old flame and at first thinks she is dreaming. Jamie, her former boyfriend and lover, who she hasn't seen or spoken to in years is at the same party all the way from Ireland. (I know he isn't Scottish, but I couldn't help but picture Jamie Frazier from Outlander!) Alexa is still hurt from the way Jamie treated her when they broke up, but you can immediately sense the chemistry between the two of them. The flashbacks that she has that are memories of Jamie are pure and full of happiness and love. I loved his character from the first moment he was introduced.
Without giving too much away, the way in which Ms. Cervantes weaved the characters into each other was flawless. Her writing style and ability is amazing! She can effortlessly make you feel such dramatic emotions on each end of the spectrum in this book. You love and hate characters with such passion, it is very easy to get caught up in the story.
The one thing that drove me nuts was the excuses that Lex continuously made for her husband. He was horrible and didn't deserve her love at all. I was so happy when things finally moved forward for Alexa in the story and she found some peace. I also thought that when the POV from Jamie was written I would have preferred different scenes than the ones I had already experienced with Alexa's perspective. Other than that, I throughly enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to anyone that is looking for a great book, full of emotion with a lot of substance. Job well done, Susan!
